  1. How to install the demo version of HDDRIVER 7.6:
  2.  
  3. Make sure that a hard disk driver is installed that supports the SCSI
  4. Driver and the XHDI specification. Currently only CBHD and HDDRIVER offer
  5. support for both standards. In case you are in doubt simply copy the file
  6. HDRIVER.PRG to a floppy disk. Boot your system from floppy disk and start
  7. the program HDDRIVER.PRG.
  8. Now start HDDRUTIL and choose "Install HDDRIVER" from the "Harddisk" menu. A
  9. dialog box is displayed and you have to choose drive C: from the list of
  10. drives and press OK. Reboot your the in order to activate HDDRIVER.
  11. HDDRIVER initially checks only one drive on each bus (IDE device 0, SCSI
  12. device 0, ACSI device 0). If you have more drives you have to configure
  13. HDDRIVER accordingly. Choose the "Device Configuration" menu entry and
  14. select the file HDDRIVER.SYS on partition C: in the file selector box.
  15. Now you can activate all valid device numbers and leave the dialog box
  16. with OK. If you want HDDRUTIL to automatically locate all connected drives,
  17. select "Auto Configuring".
  18. You can remove HDDRIVER by installing another hard disk driver according
  19. to the installation instructions for this driver.

  22. NOTE:
  23. Drives that were partitioned with very old versions of the ICD hard disk
  24. software are not AHDI compatible if they have more then 4 partitions.
  25. In this case the installation of an AHDI compatible driver requires
  26. repartitioning your drive with an AHDI compatible software package or
  27. converting the existing partitioning scheme to an AHDI compatible scheme
  28. with ICD2AHDI.
  29. The preemptive multitasking of MagiC should be activated by the MagiC
  30. timeslice CPX when using non-blocking transfers. Remove the line with the
  31. TSL keyword from the file MAGX.INF. The MagiC README provides more
  32. information. The most important thing to keep in mind when using non-
  33. blocking DMA transfers: Each DMA driver has to support this transfer mode.
  34. If this is not the case, data may be corrupted. MetaDOS and the drivers for
  35. the SLM laser printer don't support background DMA. When using bus
  36. arbitration or initiator identification (some drives require this,
  37. especially the newer Quantum drives) you have to choose a unique SCSI ID
  38. for TT and Falcon. TOS can't boot from these drives. On the Atari ST
  39. drives that require initiator identification will only work with the
  40. LINK96/97 host adapter.
  41. Most Falcon computers have problems with their SCSI hardware especially with
  42. high screen resolutions. Atari proposed several hardware fixes (clock patch)
  43. and your dealer should know about them. As in contrast to other drivers
  44. HDDRIVER drives Falcon SCSI with maximum speed, you might not have noticed
  45. this problem before.

  48. Limitations of the HDDRIVER demo version:
  49.  
  50. - Data can't be written on other partitions than C:
  51. - Writing data is much slower than in the unlimited version. Data are read,
  52.   however, with maximum speed.
  53. - SCSI drives can't be configured regarding cache and parity settings
  54. - ZIP and JAZ drives can't be configured
  55. - Formatting and Partitioning are not supported
  56. - No software based write protection
  57. - No additional tools that come with the full version (CPX for configuring
  58.   HDDRIVER etc.)

  63. - Runs on all Ataris, Hades, Medusa and Milan.
  64. - Driver for Atari SH/Megafile, SCSI/SCSI-2/Ultra-SCSI, IDE/EIDE and ATAPI

  66. - SCSI Driver interface 1.01 for SCSI and ATAPI devices
  67. - Works with all kinds of hard disks and removable media (MODs, PD, ZIP, JAZ,
  68.   SyQuest, Nomai, LS-120, ...)
  69. - Capacity of SCSI and IDE/EIDE drives not limited by any HDDRIVER-specific
  70.   limitations
  71. - Media with more than 512 physical bytes per sector (especially some MOD
  72.   media) are supported. On the ST an ICD compatible host adapter is required
  73.   in order to use this feature, e. g. the LINK96/97.
  74. - Support for DOS/Windows formatted media
  75. - DOS/Windows compatible partitioning, also for partitions > 32 MByte
  76. - Reconstruction of partition data in case the root sector was corrupted
  77. - XHDI compatible, supports the complete XHDI 1.30 command set
  78. - Write protection for single partitions and for boot and root sectors.
  79. - ZIP and JAZ media can be read or write protected on a password basis.
  80. - SCSI initiator identification and bus arbitration support
  81. - Statistics about read and write errors
  82. - You can choose the boot partition by pressing a key or depending on the
  83.   computer's SCSI ID.
  84. - Fast booting because you can configure the device numbers to be checked
  85. - Arbitrary order of devices
  86. - Optional "Fast ACSI" mode gives maximum transfer rates with most SCSI
  87.   drives connected to the ACSI bus
  88. - Special support for ICD compatible host adapters. This allows drives
  89.   > 1 GByte to be used with the ST/STE without limitations.
  90. - Important parameters of SCSI-2 devices can be configured (Cache, Parity,
  91.   Unit Attention).
  92. - With the MagiC operating system you have direct access to 23 partitions
